What’s the Herb? The Plants Behind Our Healing Salves
What’s the Herb? The Plants Behind Our Healing Salves
In many Black households, care didn’t always come from a store or a prescription bottle. It came from kitchens, gardens, jars, and hands that knew what to reach for when the body needed support.
This February, I’m sharing a series called What’s the Herb? — a gentle exploration of plants that have lived in our communities for generations. Not rushed. Not overwhelming. Just rooted.
These are the same plants that guide how I create at The Kayaye Way. Below are three herbs that live at the heart of my salves — chosen for their history, their effectiveness, and the way they care for the body slowly and steadily.
🌱 Comfrey Leaf
Comfrey has long been used in traditional herbal practices to support the body externally. It was commonly applied to sore muscles, tired joints, and skin in need of repair.
Modern herbal research shows comfrey contains allantoin, a compound that supports skin regeneration and tissue repair. Because of its strength, comfrey is best used topically and with intention — which is exactly how it’s incorporated into our salves.
This is a plant that reminds us how deeply our people understood the body.
🌹 Rose Buds
Rose is often seen as romantic, but its role in herbal care runs much deeper. Traditionally, rose has been used to soothe inflammation, calm the heart, and care for sensitive skin.
Rich in antioxidants, rose supports skin health while also offering emotional comfort. It’s gentle, grounding, and quietly powerful — a reminder that softness itself can be medicine.
In our salves, rose brings balance: nurturing the skin while inviting ease.
🌼 Calendula
Calendula has been a staple in herbal preparations for generations, especially for skin care. Known for its gentle nature, it’s often used to support irritated or inflamed skin and encourage healing.
Research shows calendula has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, making it a trusted ally for everyday skin support. It’s one of those herbs that works steadily, without urgency.
Calendula brings comfort — the kind that meets the body where it is.
These plants carry memory.
Care passed hand to hand.
Knowledge carried through survival.
They are woven into every salve I make at The Kayaye Way — crafted slowly, with intention, and respect for the wisdom that came before us.
If your body has been asking for relief, softness, or steady care this winter, these herbs are already doing the work.
